A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl has been diagnosed with a deadly sexual disease.
Stunned medics discovered the tot had syphilis after her worried parents noticed sores on her body.
The condition can only be contracted through sexual contact - and last night an urgent probe was under way into how the tot, from Glasgow, had become infected.
Her seven brothers and sisters have now been taken into care while police and social workers investigate.
Last night, a medical source said: "Syphilis is a very rare disease - and a three-year-old having it is almost unprecedented. Finding out how this little girl got it is clearly very important. We only get a few of these diagnoses a year, but it's almost always adults.
"Every protection agency is involved now because finding out how this child contracted the disease is essential."
Last week it was revealed the disease - the scourge of Victorian times - had reached a 50-year-peak in 2008.
Sun doctor Carol Cooper said: "The person that gives it to you may not be aware that they have it. Left untreated for ten to 20 years it can cause paralysis, dementia and ultimately, death.
"It is easy to cure early with antibiotics. But a child having this is very unsettling."
Tory health spokesman Murdo Fraser called the case "tragic".
He said: "It is difficult to understand something as horrific and tragic as this.
"I hope that the little girl in question is receiving the best possible medical attention and social services are investigating."
Strathclyde Police and Glasgow City Council confirmed they are investigating.
