DEFENCE chiefs will use the long-awaited military spending review for a massive cull of high-ranking officers, The Sun can reveal.
They hope to slash up to £8million a year by axing senior staff across the three services.
The shake-up of top brass, the largest for a generation, includes the removal of 17 brigadiers - each on between £95,000 and £115,000 a year.
A handful of major-generals also face the chop, according to senior MoD sources.
Similar cuts will apply to the equivalent ranks within the Navy and the RAF. Details leaked out as the behind-the-scenes wrangling over the forthcoming Strategic Defence Review continued.
In the past few months every aspect of military spending has been analysed to see where cutbacks can be made.
The MoD is under pressure to save ten to 20 per cent of its £36.9billion budget.
A source told The Sun: "The one certainty is that the cuts will be deep and across the board - and it won't just be the average squaddie who feels the pinch.
It is felt that there are areas where top brass can be streamlined and some of the top jobs are under threat. Those posts identified will be axed and the people in them paid off.
"One and two star generals, and their RAF and Navy equivalents are certainly in the firing line."
Cutting top jobs will cost millions in "golden goodbye" payments - and brigadiers taking redundancy stand to get tens of thousands of pounds.
Under current rules, junior staff with up to 15 years' service are entitled to a £7,000 lump sum.
The source added: "Axing so many senior staff will cost millions in settlement payments, which could cause a stink among the lower ranks.
"It is one thing to decide to cull senior jobs, but it is another to agree settlements."
Details of the cuts, which come under the first major spending review in 12 years, will be revealed in Autumn.
