An internet pervert who amassed a ‘staggering’ collection of indecent images of young children was exposed when his laptop was stolen.
Ronald Allen, 63, told police his computer had been taken when his home in Longshaw Drive, Little Hulton, was broken into.
The computer was recovered a year later by officers, but before it was handed back to Allen police found it contained 27,000 images of children – many showing the youngsters naked – downloaded from the internet.
Allen pleaded guilty to 21 offences of being in possession of indecent photographs and images of children over a five-year period up to 2008.
Judge Timothy Mort sentenced him to a three-year community order at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.
The judge told him: “It is often said by people like you that there is no victim in these cases, but that is completely misguided. These children are victims of sexual abuse, posing for some deviant. We worry what happens to them all, and whether some later move into prostitution.
“Anyone who downloads pictures and images like this can only fuel the fire which will involve more and more youngsters.
Lisa Boocock, prosecuting, told the court that many of the images found on the laptop and hard drives showed naked children of various ages.
Lorraine Barton, defending, said her client felt ‘extremely ashamed, embarrassed and disappointed’. She said he had given an assurance he would never again put himself in the position of being before a court.
Judge Mort described the number of indecent images as ‘staggering’ and said it was tempting to think that the only sentence for the offences was one of custody. But he added that he had to look at a more constructive course of action for someone with no previous convictions for such offences.
Balding and bespectacled Allen was told the community order would involve taking part in a special programme to deal with his ‘sexual interests’.
He will also be the subject of a sex offender prevention order, which will give police the right to examine any computer he may own in the future.
