A British Army sharp shooter has told how he killed five Taliban soldiers in 28 seconds - in a desperate bid to protect a British patrol that the insurgents were preparing to ambush.
The enemy targets were more than a mile away when the sniper, a corporal serving with 4 Rifles, got the all clear to take them out.
The corporal - who has 37 confirmed kills in just four months in the war zone - said that he and his spotter were set up in an old fort in Haji Alem, in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province.

They spotted the Taliban soldiers getting ready to attack a British foot patrol.
The sniper, who has not been named for security reasons, was using the L115A3 long-range rifle, which has an effective range of 1,100 metres.
With the Taliban soldiers on the verge of engaging the British foot patrol at least 1,600m away, the corporal had to draw on every ounce of his ability.
He requested permission to fire from his superiors - a battlefield requirement if the enemy had not yet opened fire - and was given the 'weapons free' order.
He told The Sun: 'I engaged with the first insurgent. It took me nine rounds but I took him down with the ninth. Then the other four had moved closer, so I took them down as well. They were taken down in the next 28 seconds'.

The marksman was among members of 4th Battalion The Rifles who were met by the Duchess Of Cornwall at their Wiltshire base yesterday.

Camilla, still recovering from a broken leg, used a mobility scooter and crutches to inspect the parade yesterday, meeting some of the brave soldiers horrifically wounded in Afghanistan.
The corporal played down his amazing skill yesterday, saying that his role was merely to protect his comrades, and not about notching up a kill tally.

He said: 'It's not about how many people you kill, it's about the team.'

To all those who are criticising the brilliant shooting of this afghan rubbish, if you don't like it here in this free country, GO ELSEWHERE , I assure you we will not be offended.

Good story. Credit is due him for his marksmanship, the four insurgents who stayed put after the first one bought it and the DM for not publicising his name. However, I question the architects of our societies that created a situation where our heroes can't be named because it may endanger them and their families at home. Enemies have been invited into our midst.

Explain how exactly this man is a murderer.

He was engaged in his job and identified Taliban fighters about to ambush British soldiers. They were about to kill and maim them without warning and, by this mans actions, were prevented from doing so.

What was he meant to do? Stand up and warn them?

Get real.

Reading this report and seeing the photographs of the horrendously injured soldiers just breaks my heart, but also fills me with admiration and respect that there are still young men and women who are prepared to go out and do their duty. What rubbish to suggest that the sniper was bragging about his success: he was merely being interviewed AND protecting his comrades. This is a WAR, for goodness' sake, and the Taliban have no regard for human life whatsoever, they think nothing of sending suicide bombers in where there are their own women and children are!! THEY are the murderers! God bless all you boys and girls - there are more with you than against you, believe me.

Good shooting. I wouldn't mind a go, I used to be a good target shooter in my time & this would be more challenging.

Good point
Hang on so that rifle only holds 5 rounds in a magazine, so he depleted one mag with no kill, loaded the second mag shot 4 bullets and then killed one on the 5th bullet, then loaded the 3rd magazine and killed another four in a grand total of 28 seconds. I think not!
The time it would take to find the mag load it, aim and shoot would take longer than 28 seconds unless he had them laying in front of him.....!

Some see snipers as a necessary evil.
My view is simpler, you fight to win,
that includes bringing more boys home alive.
