Judge: UK is a ‘soft touch’ for illegals

A TOP judge has slammed the Government for its "lax" immigration policy.
Furious Judge Ian Trigger claimed Britain is now a soft touch for illegal immigrants.
And he accused the Government of letting "hundreds of thousands" of them into Britain to enjoy generous welfare handouts.
Judge Trigger issued his broadside as he sentenced Jamaican drug dealer Lucien McClearley, 31, to two years' jail on Monday.
McClearley was in Britain illegally and had been told he was being deported - but then evaded authorities for nearly FIVE YEARS.
He was arrested only when cops noticed him driving a car smelling of cannabis.
McClearley was found guilty of offences including possession of cannabis and cocaine and possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply.
Judge Trigger said at Liverpool Crown Court: "Your case illustrates all too clearly the completely lax immigration policy that exists and has existed over recent years in this country.
"People like you, and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people like you, come to these shores from foreign countries to avail themselves of the generous welfare benefits that exist here.
"In the past ten years the national debt of this country has risen to extraordinary heights, largely because central Government has wasted billions and billions of pounds.
"Much of that has been wasted on welfare payments."
McClearley, of Liverpool, arrived in the UK in 2001 legally on a visitor's visa.
Immigration authorities arrested him a year later after his visa ran out.
But he appealed and was released while his case was sorted.
His application to stay was finally rejected two years later, in March 2004, but he disappeared before deportation.
McClearley was finally arrested in February this year.
Judge Trigger said: "The fact it took nearly two years to process your claim shows how desperate the situation in this country has become."

"The long-term failure of this Government's immigration policy has effects in many areas of national life."
