In the next few weeks we're going to hear a lot about cutting crime, more bobbies on the beat and putting the victim first.
All of which will be rather lost on a colleague of mine who was recently mugged and then rather let down by the forces of law and order.
I saw her a couple of days after the attack.
I saw her but didn't recognise her, so bad were her bruises as she hobbled on her crutches into my view.
The first Scotland Yard cops who dealt with her were admirable, she says.
The very next day she got a two-page letter telling her: "We have reviewed the crime but so far there is not enough evidence to continue with further inquiries and the case will now be closed."
Signed, sincerely, by "Crime Management Unit."
Oh, and would she like to take part in a victims' survey?
"It helps improve our service," said the anonymous letter writer.
It also promised to act on any new information, which she provided a few days later when she saw her two attackers swaggering towards her, forcing her to hobble into the path of a taxi and escape.
She called the robbery squad and gave details of the two thugs, the bus they got on and even drew a diagram of where they were sitting in case the CCTV wasn't working.
When she rang the next day nobody could find a record of her call and she was told she should have dialled 999.
She hadn't called the emergency number because it hadn't been a crime and we're all encouraged to ring 999 in dire straits only.
She's heard nothing since.
Except that one detective did leave her a message...on the phone that was stolen during her mugging.
We live in fear of assaults, we live in fear of being branded a racist.
When we are giving our personal opinion.
Something like 26 agencies to help a criminal and only 1
poorly funded victim support group, for the decent people.
Massaged police figures hide the grim truth.
Your alone if your attacked or worse.
The government has changed the thin blue line to yellow.
Look after your own because the government will not.
They are still dripping with pig muck with all the spineless
worthless and downright greedy fellow politicians
choking themselves from there trough of expenses
They shame us all! ???
