The Finnish Defence Forces have trained the Afghan police force’s first bomb disposal unit.
Nine students were awarded diplomas on Saturday in Balkh province on the final day of the four-month course.
The training aims to improve the ability of Afghan police to defuse different types of explosive devices, including homemade bombs.
The Finnish Foreign Ministry doled out 350,000 euros to organise the course. The programme was the brainchild of Finnish police experts stationed in the country.
Bomb disposal training is considered a crucial aspect of peace and stability. Every year thousands of Afghan civilians and police lose their lives in explosions caused by insurgent groups.
