BENNINGTON, Vt. — A Bennington police officer says he’s going to run for Bennington County sheriff next year while serving in Afghanistan with the Vermont National Guard.
Officer John Behan is due to leave within the next few weeks for the tour where he will serve as a squad leader.
He tells the Rutland Herald he expects he will still be in Afghanistan next November when the election is held, but, if he wins, he should be home in time to take office in early 2011.
Vermont State Auditor Tom Salmon Jr. and Williston Town Clerk Deborah Beckett both ran for office while deployed and each won.
