ISF arrest VBIED cell leader, ISI leader during security operations today
BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested six suspected terrorists today during a series of security operations conducted near Baghdad and Kirkuk.
The Iraqi security team, with U.S. advisors, arrested four suspects during an operation near Tarmiyah, located approximately 32 km northwest of Baghdad. The security team searched several buildings and apprehended a key member of a Ramadi vehicle-borne improvised explosive device network. The suspect is also responsible for recently transporting several tons of explosive material to Baghdad for use in IED attacks against ISF and civilians in the area.
During the same operation, three additional suspects were questioned and identified as associates of VBIED networks in northern and central Iraq. While searching for suspected terrorists, the ISF discovered explosive material used for IED and VBIED devices. ISF arrested all four suspects without incident, and cleared the area of explosive material.
In a separate security operation near Tuz Khurmatu, located 64 km south of Kirkuk, the 3rd Emergency Services Unit, with U.S. advisors, arrested Badr Sarhan Shihan, the region’s Islamic State of Iraq leader.
Badr Sarhan Shihan is a warranted criminal and active recruiter for the ISI terrorist organization, which is closely tied to al-Qaeda in Iraq. The 3rd ESU questioned and arrested one additional suspect during the operation, who was determined to be an accomplice to criminal activity near Kirkuk.
Today’s operations are part of a concerted effort by the ISF to significantly weaken terrorist networks operating in Iraq, thereby increasing the safety and security of Iraqi civilians.
