9/21/2009 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 19, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft responded to a request for support in the Asadabad area when it became necessary to destroy a known enemy position that posed a threat to friendly forces. Precision-guided munitions were released on an anti-Afghan force's cave position. The action successfully eliminated the target.

Asmar saw more F-15Es in the sky providing overwatch for friendly forces. When friendly forces were able to confirm coordinates of an enemy mortar position, the aircraft deployed multiple precision-guided munitions on the enemy target successfully terminating another threat to friendly forces.

Coalition aircraft were in the vicinity of Lashkar Gah providing armed overwatch for friendly forces when they reported receiving small-arms fire from numerous positions. Air support was requested when the friendly forces could not withdraw due to the heavy enemy fire. The primary point of enemy fire was observed and confirmed. Precision-guided munitions were used to destroy the enemy position and friendly forces were then able to safely withdraw.

At Asadabad, F-15Es provided overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces came under indiscriminate enemy fire and the point of origin was confirmed. The coordinates were passed to the F-15E and a precision-guided munition was used to eliminate the threat.

Near Lashkar Gah, Marine AV-8B Harrier aircraft provided armed overwatch for potential threatening activity in the area. Friendly forces came under enemy aggression and the AV-8s were able to deploy a precision-guided munition on the enemy forces ending the aggression.

Air Force B-1B Lancers provided armed overwatch in the Moqor area while a friendly forces patrol was on a convoy. A show of force was conducted when anti-Afghan insurgents were attempting to plant improvised explosive devices along their planned route.

There were Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft in the vicinity of Tani flying overwatch for friendly forces. The aircraft observed numerous personnel massing in the area of friendly forces. Strafing runs were performed on the enemy position deterring any potential action by the enemy forces.

At Sheykhabad, F-15Es provided armed overwatch for friendly forces in the area. Numerous shows of force were requested and were successful in deterring potential enemy action.

In total, 78 close-air-support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Thirty-one Air Force, Navy and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, two Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In total, eight close-air-support missions were flown in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities, and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities

Twenty-four Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. In addition, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Air Force airlift crews flew 153 airlift sorties, 639 short tons of cargo were delivered and about 4,000 passengers were transported. This included about 60,000 pounds of aerial resupply cargo dropped over Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On Sept. 18, Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and pararescue teams transported 22 patients to coalition field hospitals from locations in Afghanistan. Pararescue team members aboard located, rescued and began treatment to stabilize patients in the battlefield. The HH-60G aircrews transported these patients to field hospitals in less time than it takes for a civilian patient to reach emergency care by ambulance in most major cities.

Air Force tanker crews flew 58 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.5 million pounds of fuel to 253 receiving aircraft.
