MOSCOW (AP) -- Russian news agencies say the country's coast guard is warning that it will detain Georgian ships entering the territorial waters of Abkhazia.
The warning adds to already strong tensions between Georgia and Russia over the status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two separatist provinces that Russia recognized as independent after its war with Georgia last year.
The news agencies Interfax and RIA Novosti on Tuesday cited Viktor Turfanov, the head of the coastal division of the border guards service, as saying that Georgia this year has intercepted more than 20 ships in Abkhazian waters. He says Russia will intercept Georgian ships making further incursions, but added that ships would not be destroyed.
