September 04, 2009
Anchorage Daily News
An airman at Elmendorf Air Force Base has been sentenced to 90 days hard labor and reduced to the rank of basic airman for "malingering," the Air Force said today.
Daniel S. Healey, of the 3rd Operations Support Squadron, was also sentenced to 90 days confinement and restriction to base for 30 days following his court-martial conviction on Aug. 13, the Air Force said.
Malingering is the act of feigning illness or intentionally injuring oneself to avoid work or deployment. The Air Force said in a statement Healey tried to injure himself on several occasions between May 6 and May 13. It was not immediately clear how he did so or what duty he was trying to avoid.
