1-Cambodia, May, 1970: An 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment soldier dries his laundry — and his feet — during a respite from the muddy conditions of the Cambodian campaign in the Fishhook region

2-South Vietnam, August 28, 1967: Deep in thought, a soldier pauses for a smoke during a 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division sweep through a communist stronghold seven miles southeast of Lai Khe.

3-Near Bad Neuheim, Germany, June 12, 1954: Although 1st Lt. O.R. Secrest's F-86 Sabre jet skidded into a garden near the autobahn after its engine failed, it could've been much worse. After he flew under power lines and made a wheels-up landing, Secrest's ejection seat activated and he eventually landed on the tail of the aircraft. A softball team made up of medical personnel happened to be passing by on the way to a game, and they treated Secrest's injuries. Although temporarily blinded, he regained his sight in a few days.

4-South Vietnam, January, 1967: Guard duty in the monsoon rain and mud at Camp Carroll, a Marine Corps artillery base near Cam Lo.

5-Normandy, France, April, 1989: Nearly a half-century after D-Day, a German gun emplacement above Omaha Beach is as imposing as it was to American troops who came under its fire as the invasion of Europe began on June 6, 1944.

6-Long Binh, South Vietnam, October, 1968: A mechanic is nearly lost in an immense pile of wrecked and combat-destroyed armored personnel carriers and other vehicles as he searches for useful parts at the Long Binh Army depot's salvage yard.

7-Germany, August, 1959: A member of the 8th Infantry Division's newly-formed Golden Arrow Sports Parachute Club takes the first step into the void. The group, based at the Finthen, Germany, airstrip, started out as an after-hours activity for paratroopers from the 504th Infantry's Company D. When membership was opened to the rest of the 8th Infantry, over 100 applications to join poured in.

11-Germersheim, Germany, May 11, 1954: LCU 3G, based at the Rhine River Patrol's Unit K station at Karlsruhe, is guided into position as it carries a 280mm "atomic cannon" across the Rhine during Operation Big Lift. Six of the 83-ton big guns, capable of firing a shell 20 miles, were transported across the river during the joint Army-Navy exercise

12-Hue, South Vietnam, February, 1968: During the lengthy battle for control of the old national capital city of Hue, weary U.S. Marines manage to find a few minutes to relax.

13-Near Fulda, Germany, August, 1962: Sgt. Ira Sowards, right, and Pfc. Raymond Carbone peer across the border into East Germany as they patrol the area near Fulda where Cold War tacticians believed a Soviet attack on the West would most likely begin.

16-Over the Netherlands, March 18, 1981: In a view from the cockpit, an F-15 Eagle jet from the Soesterberg, Netherlands-based 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron pursues a similar aircraft during training.

17-South Vietnam, June, 1966: Two weary 101st Airborne Division soldiers rest after fighting their way out of what was described as an almost complete encirclement by North Vietnamese troops near Dak To.

18-Berlin, September, 1961: In a break from the monthlong faceoff at the border between Berlin's eastern and western sectors that followed the building of the Wall, a Berlin Brigade soldier catches up on the news while his communist counterparts relax in the background.

19-Nui Ba Den, South Vietnam, October, 1969: From his vantage point at the radio relay station atop 3,200-foot Nui Ba Den mountain, 1st Lt. John Lowe of Columbus, Ohio, an artillery officer with 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, spends his day calling in artillery strikes on the surrounding flatlands and hills. A Viet Cong attack on the site 41 years ago today resulted in the death of 24 American soldiers.

20-Mediterranean Sea, April 16, 1970: A USS Forrestal catapult switch operator ducks as an F4 Phantom jet takes off during the carrier's eighth Mediterranean deployment.

21-South Vietnam, March, 1968: A U.S. Marine takes a closer look at North Vietnamese forces massed around the beleaguered fortress of Khe Sanh.

22-South Vietnam, 1966: When the rains come to Vietnam, the red dirt and clay in the Pleiku area turn into a thick muck that coats Pfc. Larry Martin as he tries to maneuver his M-48 Patton tank.

23-South Vietnam, October, 1967: Two soldiers display a communist flag found during a raid on a Viet Cong tunnel complex 32 miles east of Saigon. Also found by troops from the 9th Infantry Division was a cache of about 1,000 weapons, including more than 200 SK44 sniper's rifles.

24-Southern Iraq, February 25, 1991: Multiple-Launch Rocket System (MLRS) rockets are fired toward Iraqi military units at dusk during Operation Desert Storm. In the foreground is a soldier from Iron Troop, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

25-South Korea, October, 1960: During a demonstration of Eighth Army firepower, an eight-inch Howitzer shell blasts into the top of a South Korean hill.
