Russia Plans to Buy French Helo Transport Ship

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - Russia plans to purchase a French naval helicopter transport ship this year and is interested in jointly producing more of the vessels, the head of Russia's armed forces said here Aug. 26.

"We are working on agreements that would allow us to produce and purchase this ship," Gen. Nikolai Makarov told reporters, referring to the French-made Mistral heavy helicopter carrier.


Asked when the purchase agreement would be finalized, Makarov said: "This year"

Russia seems to have realised that in order to modernize, its a good thing to buy off the shelf.

This is definitely a change. Russia purchasing foreign equipment? Do you think they're buying this vessel in order to use it, or just to strip it down and see how it works(reverse engineering)?
