The Railway Troops are 158 years of age
The railway transport in the Russian state during more than one and a half centuries played and continues to play a special role in the system of national and military safety. It is caused by the unique geo-strategic position and huge spatial scope of the country.
Transport maintenance is one of backbone components of development of the Russian Federation and a tool for achievement economic, social, inner and foreign policy, defensive and other state priorities. To provide readiness of railways and railway objects for actions in any, including fighting, conditions, it is necessary to spend preliminary actions. Both in peace and in wartime these actions will be organised and carried out at direct participation of the Railway troops.
Railway troops of Russia conduct the report of the history since August, 6th, 1851, when Emperor Nikolay I at the closing stage of construction of the St. Petersburg-Moscow railway approved the Regulations about the structure of management of the St. Petersburg-Moscow railway. According to this Regulations the first special military formations for protection and operation of the railway also were created.
And already in a quarter of century, during Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, military railwaymen successfully handled uneasy problems facing to them and provided continuous supply of formations of the Russian army along the railway site of Bendery-Galatz constructed by them.
The important role was played by the Railway troops during the First World War, for which period they constructed about 300 km wide-gage and up to 4 000 km narrow-gauge railways, restored more than 4 600 km of top structure of way and almost 5 000 km of telephone and telegraphic lines of railway communications.
Сontribution of military railwaymen to victorious end of the Great Patriotic war is also ponderous. Carrying out tasks in view in heavy, more often fighting conditions, they restored about 120 thousand kilometres of ways, more than 15 thousand bridges and pipes, constructed over 10 thousand kilometres of new rail tracks, neutralised and destroyed more than 2 million mines and land-mines. The personnel of troops showed highest skill, will and courage, selflessness and heroism at defence of Moscow and Leningrad, at fights under Stalingrad and at the Kursk Bulge, during liberation operations in Ukraine, in Belarus, Moldova and Baltic, in the countries of Eastern Europe and Germany.
After termination of the Great Patriotic war the Railway troops actively participated in restoration and reconstruction of destroyed railways, construction of new trunk-railways. The most significant of them are the lines of Abakan-Taishet, Ivdel-Ob, Tyumen-Surgut and, certainly, the Baikal-Amur main, the 35th anniversary since which beginning of construction we have celebrated this year.
Subdivisions of troops were repeatedly involved in liquidation of consequences of acts of nature, failures and accidents, including accidents in the Chernobyl atomic power station, earthquakes in Armenia.
The troops has shown a high level of professional skill during rendering humanitarian help to the Republic Abkhazia in 2008, when within two months the railway site of Sukhumi-Ochamchira with extent more than 50 kilometres was successfully restored, 9 railway bridges were repaired, more than 11.5 thousand wooden crossties were replaced, repair of rail-crosstie lattice on a site by extent more than 45 kilometres was carried out.
The major task, which faces the Railway troops in 2009, consists in carrying out of prime actions on going of troops to the new, perspective shape.
