Distinguished Flying Cross

Awarded to U.S. and Foreign military personnel and civilians who have displayed extraordinary heroism while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States, in military operations involving conflict with a foreign force, or while serving with a friendly nation engaged in armed conflict against a force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

Distinguished Flying Cross with "V" device

Awarded for actions during the Global War on Terror

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat "V" to Captain Michael D. Trapp, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving as Pilot of an AV-8B Harrier, Marine Attack Squadron FIVE HUNDRED THIRTEEN (VMA-513), United States Marine Corps Forces, Central Command, Bagram, Afghanistan, on 25 August 2003, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Captain Trapp was the wingman in a section of Harriers ordered to scramble and provide emergency close air support to an ambushed coalition patrol. Upon arrival at the target area, two ground elements were reporting incoming fire from enemy ambush positions. For the next four hours, the section attacked at low altitude while exposing themselves to surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft weapon attacks. On multiple attacks, Captain Trapp engaged the enemy with his 25-mm. cannon resulting in the destruction of enemy troops. Captain Trapp used binoculars to locate forces and fired his remaining 25-mm. rounds and a 5-inch rocket into several enemy positions. He re-attacked and delivered a 500-pound laser guided bomb directly onto an enemy position. By his superb airmanship, inspiring courage, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Captain Trapp reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. (The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.)
