What happens to Embassies in wartime?

I was thinking about this, earlier today. What happens when two countries are at war, and they have embassies on each other's countries? Are they considered "targets", or something like that, since they belong to the enemy? I'm guessing that on most cases, the embassies would be evacuated ahead of time, as a security measure from failed diplomacy. But what if there isn't time? What if it just happens?

I am sure there is a plan for WSHTF. I do not nore will I claim to know what happens. I am sure they use common sense like to bug out WSHTF.
