MarSOC sergeant dies in Afghanistan

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina-based Marine with Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command died Wednesday in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department.
Sgt. Michael C. Roy, 25, of North Fort Myers, Fla., was killed supporting combat operations in Nimroz province. He was with 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Roy trained as a rifleman after joining the Corps in September 2001, according to a news release.
Prior to joining MarSOC in March 2008, Roy served three tours in Iraq, according to Maj. Michael Armistead, a command spokesman. Roy’s medals include the Purple Heart.
He is the fifth member of MarSOC to die in combat operations in Afghanistan since September 2007.
