The Battle of Tarawa (US code name Operation Galvanic) was a battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II, largely fought from November 20 to November 23, 1943. It was also the first time in the war that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. Previous landings met little or no initial resistance. The 4,500 Japanese defenders were well-supplied and well-prepared, and they fought almost to the last man, exacting a heavy toll on the United States Marine Corps. The US had suffered similar casualties in other campaigns, for example over the six months in the campaign for Guadalcanal, but in this case the losses were suffered within the space of 76 hours. Nearly 6,000 Japanese and Americans died on the tiny island in the fighting.http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube/images/play_thread.png (http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/media/6291-Graphic-Dead-Marines-on-Tarawa)

FDR wanted these films to be seen in the theaters during the news reels. He wanted the public to know that the war was more costly than just monetarily.
As much as those men are brothers of mine, you couldn't pay me enough to walk those beaches on the day those films were made.

Highlander; I'll pray along with you that someday there will be no more war.

The men of the Graves Registration Service (GRS or GRREG) are rarely mentioned let alone given the recognition they deserve for doing one of the toughest jobs in the military. These units were the ones who had to walk that horrible beach the day this was filmed to gather and record the dead from that battle. "One day there will be no more war" that is true but sadly no human will see this day because it shall only come once the human race no longer exists.
