I'm trying to work out why these guys who set the planes up are called POGs, as are every other person in the US Armed Forces except Grunts. I thought every person in the services contributed to the effort in some way. For example and Ordinance person who gets and sets the amount of ammunition we get/got, without them we would be toast. So too the driver of the truck that took us to the bloody battle. What did he do wrong, didn't he do his assigned job? What am I missing here?

Yeah, I'm kinda flummoxed that anyone who really knew what we did would think that way either. As far as I was concerned, these guys (and now gals), were as "military" as anyone else in the Navy, excepting of course our friends the snake eaters. I was on an auxiliary ship for over 4 years, an ammo ship. During that time, we were the most active surface ship on the east coast. During that time, when heavy shit was going down, it seemed we were in the middle of it. From the incident with Qaddafi's "Line of Death", to Beirut in '82, we were hoppin. It certainly made deployments go by quicker than just being in the Med.
Funny thing, if I hadn't let a nuke recruiter talk me out of it, carrier flight deck is the area I wanted to go. Coming from an Army airborne family, I wanted to be in the thick if it, and that was certainly the place to be. Hell, I woulda made 30+ yrs active duty I think, if I had done catapults and arresting gear/launch and recovery. A 24/7 job on our carriers. But my UNREP ship wouldn'ta UNREP'ed if I hadn't done my job. Deploying to the Med and Indian Ocean every year for 4+yrs. Folks can call em POG's if they want. We respect each other because we know what we did. We were all needed.
