Rounds are now available with a 2 axis Course Correcting Fuse allowing more precise fire. Excalibur rounds with GPS capability fired from this weapon have a circular error probable of about five meters. The effective maximum range depends on projectile but is anywhere from 15 to 25 mileshttp://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube/images/play_thread.png (http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/media/5606-Down-Range-of-the-M777-Howitzer)

Howitzers fire a higher trajectory lower velocity round "indirect fire" cannons or guns fire a more direct higher velocity round, most of the time able to see they're target. You will get different opinions on this because you can elevate the gun on just about anything and create some kind of indirect fire I.e. naval guns

Current U.S. Military doctrine defines howitzers as any cannon artillery capable of high-angle (45' to 90' elevation) and low angle (45' to 0' elevation); guns are defined as only capable of low-angle fire and mortars are only capable of high-angle fire.
For the definition of Cannon go to here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon
It was to long to put in the comments but in the explanation it tell how they call the names to a arty piece
