I was involved in this business for five years and this video clip was frequently used as a bad example of the recommended protocols [called BMP's] required by shipping companies. It shows poor fire discipline & control, including shooting at the skiff when it went astern of the vessel. This was played over and over at conferences and meetings by other security companies who wanted to show they WERE NOT gung ho trigger happy but could follow the international guidelines they signed up to when taking the contract. Interesting video but for the wrong reasons.

drummer - really interesting. Must confess I thought they did okay in the fact that the arseholes didn't get on board. They didn't look like they were selling souvenirs so I'm wondering what protocols exist that say they can't be shot at. Also, remember this happened at the peak of the piracy problem there.

CuChi, I have my feet in both camps: As a former military man they did achieve their aim and the ship was not boarded. As a military man working in the private sector with customers to appease then this video highlights bad practice. If you want to see the full spec then check out the BMP 4 http://www.mschoa.org/docs/public-documents/bmp4-low-res_sept_5_2011.pdf?sfvrsn=0 But as end users companies like Blackwater [and their other maritime name?] gave the industry a trigger happy reputation in the early years so shipping companies, fearful of litigation turned to the UK security companies as a lower risk option. My company [] traded on our Royal Marine credentials as did many others and for a few years the Uk ex forces companies did well. No ships were taken with armed security aboard and no one was shot. So an indication of our different approach would be warning shots are aimed and directed by the team leader and stopped when the threat stopped amongst many others in place to assure weapons fired only when really needed. Shipping companies were paranoid of incidents like the one in this clip. Now the threat has diminished because of better naval & government cooperation. Also ex soldiers from countries like India, Thailand, Poland and the Philipines are now undercutting Uk prices and the bottom has fallen out of the market. When they are coming at full speed & not slowing down after Your first warning shot is obvious reason enough to open fire. Infact the only reason They were not boarded was because aggressive action was taken. Playing with sea foam & using deterrents on these guys is just stupid & would probably get You shot or an RPG up Your ass. After all the money Theyve extorted & the innocent lives Theyve taken, any aggressive act should be met with far greater aggressive force. Thats why there were no attacks in 2013 ,thats why piracy has dropped 40% world wide & THAT is the reason the market dropped on the pirate security business. Fuck those pirates , They know the risks
