Shrapnel is like a gigantic razor blade but worse because its jagged and moving at ungodly speed when it goes off. Add in an airburst delivery and you have nasty, despite what Freddy the great said. I am also guessing he said that prior to the invention of spherical case shell by Mr Shrapnel in 1784 (Frederick the Great died in 1786).
