I am not an arty expert. I am curious as to what is going on here.

They are in a what kind of vehicle?
What projectiles and charges are they firing?
Who is aiming the gun?
What's with the pin the guy on the left has to insert and cover prior to getting the string from the guy on the right? he has some trouble at times.

Schwit,

Not an expert either but I'll give it a shot....

1. Most likely Self-propelled artillery. (maybe Paladin?)
2. not sure what munitions.
3. Gunner
4. Firing Pin + cord so the recoil does not take you hand off...

I presume this system of firing has been developed over may years to minimize risk of load errors and misfires.

I'm sure someone can explain more, or correct any errors :-)

Bernie

Correcting myself a little,
I believe the firing pin (wrong expression maybe)...is actually a small charge itself....(Firing cap???)

I was a 13 Bravo. M109 Paladin. Shell, HE ( high explosive) fuse, PD (point Detonate) charge, one lima (the green charge canister) The Primer is kinda like a brass shot shell that when triggered fires flame into the red bottom of the green charge, firing the round. in a nutshell, aiming is done towards a reference point, (collimator) as the target is more than likely not observable. hope that helps.

They were that fucking slow, I thought it was the Navy.

Bit of an error early on, resulted in misload? and 30 seconds rounds apart, settled down to about 20 seconds.

Whats all that shit at the end of each load like Mutiny on the Bounty?

Never been in one of those bastards, but theres more commands than in the bible going on. Can anyone Charge5 give me the drill on the firing sequence.

Nice bit of kit anyhow, nice and quiet, manual load a bit tame tho, but how many of these in a battery/squadron/regiment? what is a lot of them called?

They all drop short bastards down here. That or bloody heroes.

we used to swab the whole entire breach between every round back in the day, the charges I see now are very different, maybe they can go 5-6 rounds before cooling off, I have not been in a M109A whatever since 1997.
