Actually, this guy's name is Ahmed Dogan. He's an ethnic turk who is known for having some deep links with the mafia and he ran for prime minister. Dogan is known for intimidation, bribery, corruption and even once stood up in front of a crowd of ethnic turks in a small village where said:

"The power is concentrated in me, not in your MP who can not solve problems but only adopt laws... I am the instrument of power, who distributes the bits of financing in the state."

While what was said doesn't seem that offensive, it's more the context in which it was said that made it so controversial. He was basically proclaiming himself as the de-facto leader of the country.

Regarding the shooting: the attacker, Oktay Enimehmedov (also an ethnic turk), used a gas pistol. It might have caused some serious injury, but it was probably not going to be lethal: http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=147011

In other words: this wasn't an assassination attempt. Either the attacker was really dumb and didn't realize that you can't really kill a person with a gas gun, or he just wanted to scare the shit out of Dogan.

Stupid or not, running up to someone and pointing a gun at his head trying to shoot ( you can hear the click ) looks very much like an assassination.
Also, there are longer videos of this where they take a knife from him, maybe he was hoping for a second chance? Who knows, he got beat up and got what he deserved.

It's a gas pistol, it doesn't shoot bullets... it shoots tear gas. Gas pistols are a non-lethal, close-quarters, self-defense weapon. Shooting somebody with tear gas is hardly an assassination attempt, especially in a country like Bulgaria where there have been PLENTY of assassinations! Like I said, he might have caused some very serious damage, but it's not very likely that he would have killed Dogan.
