A specialized unit that blends ground cavalry troops with an airborne long range surveillance company stood up at Fort Bragg, N.C., continuing the Army’s march toward a modular force.

The 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment (Reconnaissance and Surveillance) was activated May 21 during a morning ceremony hosted by the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

The unit is the Army’s first reconnaissance and surveillance squadron within its newly minted battlefield surveillance brigades, according to a news release from the XVIII Airborne Corps.

Using lessons learned from combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Army leaders directed the creation of units like the 1-38 Cavalry specifically designed to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance missions for division, corps, or joint task force commanders, the release said.
