A Syrian-bound plane intercepted by Turkey was carrying Russian-made defence equipment destined for Syria's defence ministry, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

"Passenger aircraft cannot carry ammunition and defence equipment," Mr Erdogan said, adding, "unfortunately there was such equipment on board".

Turkish jets forced the plane, coming from Moscow, to land in Ankara.

Syria and Russia have denied the plane was carrying illegal cargo.

They have accused Turkey of putting lives in danger.

In Syria itself, a huge explosion has hit near a state security building in the centre of the capital, Damascus.

State media said two people had been injured in the attack, which it blamed on "terrorists".

"Russia's ITAR-Tass news agency quoted an official at the Russian Embassy in Ankara as saying that the cargo "was not of Russian origin." Rosoboronexport, which handles most of Russia's military export contracts, said none of its cargo was on the plane."

Right......The flight originated in Moscow, so they must have been flying around with this stuff for days. I guess the Russians are too used to their own people believing the shit that comes out of the Kremlin. Do they really think that is a plausible explanation/denial?

All is cool, but why wont they show us some pictures of that cargo? It would have been a massive media move to put Russia in a bad perspective.
So far only words and nothing else.

It's not a big secret that Russia is supplying Syria.

Turkish side said that the plane carried 300 kg of ammunition. 300 kg, that's like nothing...

It's much easier to move tons of ammunition by sea...

Rather weird move by Turkey.
