ERIE, Pa. — A former soldier from northeastern Pennsylvania has been ordered to spend more than a year in prison for stealing the credit-card numbers of 32 fellow soldiers to make online purchases.
Joshua Raines, 23, was ordered Monday to 15 months in federal prison for using the soldiers’ information to make $10,000 in fraudulent purchases between 2009 and 2011.
The Erie Times- News reported that Raines, of Erie, was discharged from the Army in 2008 after marrying a South Korean national without informing his superiors while stationed in that country.
Federal prosecutors said Raines tried to buy about $60,000 in merchandise, but many of his transactions were marked as fraudulent.
Raines pleaded guilty in April. He told a federal judge in Erie that he had learned from his mistakes.
