what i don't understand is how people survive a direct hit from 30mm.
I thought that kind of ammo is HE.

A-10 commonly use 30mm "CM" aka combat mix of HE and AP so not every round is exploding and you add that to other bodies and objects to absorb some of the frag its possible to survive.You probably in a world of hurt though or only live long enough for another pass lol

Actually, those A-10s do NOT use CM in Afghanistan. Waste of AP ammunition of depleted Uranium. From the last pilot I asked, he said, they travel with HE only. No tanks to really kill there if you know what I mean... Besides, I'v done enough missions in my DCS-A10C warthog to know that the HEI is enough to destroy a jeep in a half burst at 1.5 nautical miles and 300 knots. :) If you want to see what I mean, youtube "ralfidude" lots of A-10 footage there for you.
