Okay lets be serious its interesting, the bomb was discovered by the construction workers and identified as an old WW 2 chemically detonated bomb, these bombs were specifically designed to detonate hours after the raid was already over to spread terror and hinder rescue workers – quite diabolical huh?
The problem is that these bombs are notoriously difficult to disarm so they had to detonate it instead, left a lot of fires on roof tops and some damage to windows etc.

hehe yeah was nice. the bomb actually was in the line of sight out of my office at work... about 50 meters away... i have some free time now since the surounding buildings are still closed by the police... well thx bomb for some free time =)

Im not sure the exact make up of the bomb and im sure they probably considered the possibility of covering the bomb with salt water bladders and or suspended just above witch could of absorbed some of the concussive force and flamable debris.Of course depending on the location of surrounding structures and the bomb componets doing so could of made it worse. I wonder if they did consider the option. Was it a densly populated area?

They covered the bomb in sandbags and hay. They tried to defuse the thing for more than 12h before giving up. The decision to detonate it on site was postponed several times, because they feared severe damage to the surrounding buildings, but they had no other option. thanks for that, awesome first hand account, I believe the bomb was one that had a delayed detonation mechanism, chemically based - they are notoriously hard to defuse I heard.
