nothing, there has always been hippies protesting some stupid crap for no reason, look through a history book. Seems you are you a fan of one of my heroes and mentors is the late Jim Rohn who, when talking about business, pointed out that things would pretty much stay the way they always were.
I suppose you are right, that the overwhelming media attention to the tiny sub-culture just got to me.
