It was the deadliest maritime campaign of the Second World War, described by Winston Churchill as "the worst journey in the world".
Between 1941 and 1945, the Arctic Convoys delivered vital supplies to our Russian allies, to help them defeat the Nazi threat.
Attacked by German planes, warships and submarines in temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius, 3000 men perished - the highest fatality rate of any naval campaign in the war.
Today, in the 70th anniversary year of the campaign, fewer than 200 veterans remain. But they have never received an official medal from the British government for their service.
