If your Son passed away suddenly, wouldn't you want to embrace him just one more time? I'm pretty sure I would...even though I do not like to touching the dead.

Some people go to wakes and public viewings to pay respect, sometimes you'll see someone lean over the casket and place a kiss on the deceased.

Other people use cremation and distribute the ashes etc

I will make an attempt at answering.

Firstly, 30 years ago we had no such thing as Islam hating US. In times of cold war, those people saw US as a saving angel against USSR. Because USSR was against religion. So they gave all their support to US and were friends with US up till the end of Russian Afghan campaign.

After that they saw that US was simply using them for their own goals and needs, so they felt abused and started hating US.
