official NORAD release:

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command officials acknowledged today that U.S. systems detected and tracked a launch of the North Korean Taepo Dong-2 missile at 6:39 p.m. EDT. The missile was tracked on a southerly Launch over the Yellow Sea.

Initial indications are that the first stage of the missile fell into the sea 165 km west of Seoul, South Korea. The remaining stages were assessed to have failed and no debris fell on land. At no time were the missile or the resultant debris a threat.

just learned something new - apperantly you can tell the difference between rockets that are used to transport a satellite and one that used for a nuclear warhead - to us they all look the same not tho the specialists.

Yes, rockets that deliver satellites go only up, nuclear ones go up and down :D

On a serious note, and those are only my thoughts, satellite rocket have additional side boosters since they can carry multiple satellites at ones so require extra power as well as having bigger frontal part comparing to its body so the satellites can fit in. But me no pro, that's just imho.
