KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 25, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition patrol discovered a large cache of banned substances during an operation in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, Tuesday.

During the operation, the combined force interdicted a shipment of drug-processing materials including morphine, ammonium chloride and sodium carbonate totalling more than 46,640 pounds (21,200 kilograms).

The shipment was confiscated by Afghan police officials and one person of interest was detained for further questioning.

In Sangin district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security patrol discovered a weapons cache today. The cache consisted of five 83mm mortars, two rocket-propelled grenade canisters, three RPGs, 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) of homemade explosives, and other improvised explosive device making materials. The weapons were safely disposed of at the scene by the security force.

During an operation to disrupt an insurgent network in Shahid-E Hasas district, Uruzgan province, a combined Afghan and coalition security patrol killed several insurgents and detained numerous other insurgents yesterday. Upon arriving in the area, ANSF and coalition forces received small arms fire from insurgents. The patrol returned fire resulting in the deaths of several insurgents, and the subsequent detention of others.

Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security patrol detained an insurgent leader during an operation in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, during a multi-day operation. The insurgent leader directed several insurgents and is responsible for improvised explosive attacks against ANSF and coalition forces.
