KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 27, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a precision airstrike in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, resulting in the death of a key Taliban leader Monday.
The target of the operation was responsible for planning attacks against Afghan forces. He provided weapons and logistical support to insurgents throughout the district for use in ambush and roadside bomb attacks along Highway 1.
After ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force called for the airstrike. Following the strike, the security force conducted a follow-on assessment of the area and determined no civilians were harmed during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed a Taliban leader and two of his associates as they attempted to place a roadside bomb in Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province, yesterday. The Taliban leader organized and participated in attacks against Afghan forces. He also specialized in the facilitation of roadside bombs and distribution of weapons throughout the region. Multiple weapons and the roadside bomb were confiscated from the scene and no civilians were harmed during the operation.
In Chahar Darah district, Kunduz province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader responsible for roadside bomb attacks. The leader organized a group of insurgent fighters and was also responsible for roadside bombs and direct fire attacks throughout the region. Additionally, one suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader in Dahanah-ye Ghori district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The leader facilitated a group of insurgent fighters and conducted large-scale attacks against Afghan forces, as well as, orchestrated both a roadside and car bomb network. The security force also detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.
Also in the North, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in Kunduz district, Kunduz province, yesterday. The facilitator specialized in the construction and transportation of roadside bombs for use in attacks against Afghan forces throughout the region.
South
In Zharay district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized a weapons cache consisting of nine hand grenades, nine grenade fuses and 350 7.62 mm rounds, yesterday.
In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator, yesterday. The leader facilitated the movement of weapons and explosives, as well as, planned attacks against Afghan forces. No civilians were injured during the operation.
East
A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 38 mortar canisters, various mortar rounds, one anti-personnel mine and five 105 mm rockets. The combined force blocked off the area to protect the local population, and an explosive ordnance disposal team safely removed the items to be destroyed at a later date.
In Andar district, Ghazni province, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized a weapons cache yesterday, consisting of one AK-47 rifle, and more than 1,200 7.62 mm and 9 mm rounds.
Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered an explosive cache in Behsud district, Nangarhar district, yesterday. The cache, discovered during a security operation, consisted of 7,937 pounds (3,600 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate. All the explosives were seized by security forces.
