KABUL, Afghanistan (June 20, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents and detained two individuals while searching for a Taliban facilitator in Kajaki district, Helmand province, yesterday.
The facilitator is a narcotics and weapons facilitator operating in Kajaki. He is in charge of ordering material from other Taliban members in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
When searching for the facilitator, the Afghan-led security force discovered several pounds of ammonium nitrate. The force detained two individuals associated with the nitrate for further questioning about Taliban activity in the area. While leaving the area, the force was attacked by several armed insurgents. They responded to enemy fire, killing several individuals.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a search for an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan insurgent in Burkah district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The target is involved in suicide attack planning, primarily operating in Baghlan.
During the search, the Afghan-led security force encountered several suspected insurgents. After interviews with residents, the individuals were detained for further questioning.
Also in Burkah, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an overnight search for a senior Taliban leader yesterday. The leader also supports the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and is involved in foreign fighter facilitation and training in Burkah.
Following several intelligence reports, the security force targeted the leader’s suspected compound. While searching the area and interviewing residents, the force identified several individuals they suspected as Taliban insurgents. The men were taken into custody for further questioning.
South
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader in Zharay district, Kandahar province, during a nighttime operation yesterday. The leader was an operational level leader responsible for coordinating and executing attacks in Panjwa’i district. He also coordinated movements of lethal aid to insurgents in the district.
The Afghan-led security force searched for him at an associated compound after receiving several intelligence reports. During questioning, the leader identified himself to the security force and was detained.
Also in Kandahar, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one of his associates during a nighttime operation in Kandahar City, yesterday. The leader was actively engaged in imminent roadside bomb attack planning against Afghan security forces operating in Kandahar City.
He was captured during a search of his compound, after the combined security force tracked him there earlier in the day. One associated individual was also detained after the force determined he had ties to Taliban activity in the area.
In Tarnak wa Jaldak district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent. They were searching for a Taliban leader who oversees a roadside bomb attack cell and transfers weapons to insurgents.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two individuals with suspected ties to the Taliban during a security operation in Mehtar Lam district, Laghman province, yesterday. The force was searching for a Taliban facilitator who is involved in executions, ambushes and intimidation of Afghan civilians.
The two individuals were detained after the Afghan-led security force discovered a cache of weapons. The cache contained roadside bomb making materials, including multiple mortar base plates, empty munitions casings, two five-gallon (19 liters) hydrogen peroxide containers and mortar casings. Several rifles, ammunition and chest racks with loaded magazines were also found at the site.
In Paktika province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents and destroyed roadside bomb making materials during a security operation in Mota Khan district, Paktika province, yesterday. The force was conducting a search targeting a Haqqani network leader who conducts, coordinates and directs roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. During the search, they discovered the individuals hiding 661 pounds (300 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate and several grenades.

The force was searching for a Haqqani network facilitator responsible for moving roadside bomb materials to insurgents.
