Lost another good friend on 5-27-11. Stationed out of Ft. Drum, I always remember him from Basic as one of the guys who always stuck out because he had few things to say, always busted his ass and never complained. I wish I could have had the privilege of serving next to him.
Fort Drum, N.Y. -- A Fort Drum soldier was killed by gunfire Friday in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced today.
Pfc. John C. Johnson, 28, of Phoenix, Ariz., died from injuries after his unit was attacked with small arms fire, according to a news release.
Johnson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He joined the Army in February 2011. He was assigned to Fort Drum in July 2010. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in March.
Johnson is survived by his wife, two children, and his parents.
He was the 20th Fort Drum soldier killed in 2011 in Afghanistan, according to Fort Drum's public affairs office.
