KABUL, Afghanistan (May 30, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday.

The facilitator was responsible for the transfer of weapons and explosives in preparation for Haqqani attacks. He also coordinated improvised explosive device attacks targeting Afghan security forces.

The Afghan-led security force located the facilitator at his compound in the district. The force isolated the area and an Afghan team member called for all occupants to exit peacefully, allowing the security force to ensure the safety of the civilians.

The force searched the compound looking for the targeted individual. During the search they discovered an AK-47 rifle, pistol, multiple chest racks and ammunition. Completing the search, the force was able to identify and detain the facilitator based on the information provided during initial questioning.

North

In Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation yesterday. The leader prepares attacks against Afghan National Security Forces using explosive devices, mines and conventional weapons.

Following intelligence tips, the Afghan-led security force searched for the leader at an associated compound in the district. Afghan members of the force interviewed local residents and were able to identify and detain two suspected insurgents. No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents during a security operation targeting a Taliban facilitator in Imam Sahib district, Kunduz province, yesterday. The facilitator supports an insurgent attack cell throughout central and northern Kunduz province. The network he supports consists of insurgents who are directly involved in homemade bomb and suicide vest attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan National Security Forces.

The Afghan-led force searched several buildings and interviewed residents at a compound associated with the facilitator. Based on interviews with residents, the security force was able to identify and detain several suspected insurgents for further questioning. The force conducted and completed the operation without the use of force, all while ensuring the safety of the woman and children.

South

In Musa Qaleh district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader yesterday. The Taliban leader is the key commander in the district, providing tactical direction, logistical support, and command oversight for insurgents in that area. He is involved in weapons and explosive-device facilitation, homemade bomb attacks and funding procurement for the insurgency in Musa Qaleh.

The Afghan-led security force identified the two individuals while searching a compound associated with the leader. The force’s suspicions were confirmed after conducting on-scene interviews with local residents. Both individuals were taken into custody for further questioning and possible detention. No shots were fired during the operation and no civilians were harmed.

A combined Afghan and coalition force operation seized narcotics and explosives in Deh Rawud district, Uruzgan province, yesterday. The combined force seized 320 pounds (145 kilograms) of opium, 44 pounds (20 kgs) of hashish, 1,654 pounds (750 kgs) of ammonium nitrate and one AK-47 rifle. One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

In central Helmand province yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force operation seized 657 pounds (298 kgs) of opium. Two men were detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

Also in central Helmand yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force seized 176 pounds (80 kgs) of wet opium. One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

The AK-47 and all drugs were safely destroyed on site.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Bermel district, Paktika province, yesterday. The area is historically known as an insurgent facilitation and training center.

The security force searched multiple buildings in the village in search of Taliban activity. While searching the area the force came across several individuals who they assessed had ties to Taliban and Haqqani activity in the area. With the help of residents, the force was able to identify and detain several suspected insurgents for further questioning. Throughout the search, the force ensured the safety of the women and children.

In Zormat district, Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation yesterday. The Afghan led force was conducting the operation to capture a Haqqani network leader in the district. The leader manages fighters, executes tactical insurgent operations, and plans attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.

Several individuals were detained after the force searched a compound associated with the leader. Afghan members of the force interviewed residents who helped the force identify the suspected insurgents. The force conducted the search without using force, and no civilians were harmed.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The Afghan-led force was conducting a security operation targeting a Taliban facilitator responsible for homemade bomb emplacements targeting security forces in the area.

The security force searched a compound in the district where they interviewed local residents about the whereabouts of the insurgent facilitator. While conducting interviews, the force identified and detained two individuals with suspected ties to Taliban activity in the area. No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed.

In Chak district, Wardak province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader yesterday. The leader has participated in and coordinated attacks against security forces. Additionally, he coordinates training for subordinate Taliban insurgents.

While commencing the search for the leader at a compound, the Afghan-led force discovered a rocket propelled grenade, mortar round, grenade, chest rack and multiple rounds of small arms ammunition. The individual associated with the items was detained for further questioning. Before completing the operation, the force safely destroyed the small cache of weapons. No civilians were harmed during the operation.
