KABUL, Afghanistan (May 29, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation resulting in one armed female killed and several suspected insurgents detained during a security operation in Musa Khel district, Khost province yesterday.
The Afghan-led security force encountered the individual, armed with a rocket propelled grenade launcher, as they attempted to conduct a security clearance of a compound associated with a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin leader. While the force was moving into position, the individual rushed out of the compound with the RPG launcher in hand. After identifying the RPG, the security force, as a protection measure, engaged the armed individual, resulting in the individual’s death. After initial assessment, the force discovered the armed individual was a female.
The force searched the immediate area where they recovered multiple RPG warheads, grenades and a bag filled with 7.62 mm rounds. Additionally, several suspected insurgents were detained.
The combined security force was in the area targeting a HIG leader who provides leadership and direction for HIG insurgents in Qalandar and Musa Khel districts.

In Chimtal district, Balkh province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation targeting a senior Taliban leader, yesterday.
The leader is the Taliban appointed insurgent security chief for the province. He leads 10 to 18 fighters and conducts small arms, indirect fire and IED attacks against Afghan National Police. The leader is also involved in weapons and explosives procurement, as well as narcotics trafficking. The Afghan-led force searched for the leader at a compound in Chimtal district. While searching the area, the security force identified and detained several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban activity.
Additionally the force discovered and safely destroyed 50 pounds (23 kilograms) of unprocessed heroin.
The operation was conducted and completed with no shots fired and no civilians harmed.
South
In Shah Joy district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader yesterday.
The leader leads a core group of insurgent fighters augmented by al-Qaida associated foreign fighters assembled in Quetta, Pakistan.
Following multiple intelligence leads, the combined security force searched for the leader at a compound in Shah Joy district. During the search, the force noticed one individual, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, attempting to flee the area. He was successfully apprehended and detained for further questioning. Several other suspected insurgents were identified after the force conducted interviews with local residents.
No shots were fired during the operation, and the security force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children.
In Zurmat district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani Network leader, yesterday.
The leader manages fighters, executes tactical insurgent operations and plans attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.
After extensive intelligence gathering, the Afghan-led security force searched several compounds associated with the leader. During the search, the force came across several individuals with suspected ties to insurgent activity. After questioning these individuals and local residents, several suspected insurgent were detained. Throughout the search, the security force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children.
In Zharay district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a drug cache yesterday.
The cache consisted of 4,409 pounds (2000 kilograms) of marijuana.
In Kandahar district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of one 60 mm mortar round, one 120 mm mortar round, one RPG and 10 60 gallons (27 kgs) bags filled with homemade explosive materials.
In Zharay district Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of three victim-operated IEDs and a large amount of IED making materials.
All weapons and drugs have been or will be destroyed by security forces
East
In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani Network leader yesterday.
The leader is involved in IED and direct attacks against Afghan National Army in the district.
The Afghan-led force searched for the targeted leader at an associated compound in the district. During the search, an Afghan member of the force interviewed residents about the whereabouts of the insurgent leader. After initial questioning, the security force identified two individuals with suspected ties to Haqqani activity in the district. They were detained for further questioning.
No civilians were harmed during the operation.
