KABUL, Afghanistan (May 17, 2011) – An Afghan and International Security Assistance Force captured a Taliban facilitator along with several other suspected insurgents in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province yesterday.

The Taliban facilitator was involved in building improvised explosive devices for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Based on numerous intelligence reports, the combined security force searched for the facilitator at a compound in the district. The force called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, ensuring the safety of all women and children. The force searched the area and following interviews with residents, identified and detained the facilitator and several of his associates.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Sangin district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The facilitator provided guidance and helped attack cells conduct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout northern Helmand. He coordinated money, IED components, and munitions necessary for direct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Extensive intelligence gathering led the combined security force to a compound in the district. While moving to the targeted compound, the force detained two individuals attempting to avoid capture. Continuing the mission, the force moved to search the targeted compound, where they called all occupants to exit the premises ensuring the safety of all civilians in the area. The facilitator was identified and detained after initial questioning.

No shots were fired during the operation.

East

In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents while searching for a Haqqani Network facilitator during a security operation, yesterday.

The facilitator is responsible for the purchase of weapons and explosive device materials. He is also responsible for emplacing IEDs for attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

Intelligence reports led the combined security force to a compound in the district in search of the leader. The force isolated a building and called for all occupants to exit peacefully. All residents complied, allowing the security force to ensure the safety of all women and children. The force interviewed residents about insurgent activity in the area and based on the information provided by the residents, several suspected insurgents were detained.

In Musa Khel district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani Network leader, yesterday.

The leader is responsible for coordinating IED emplacements and is associated with direct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He conducts operations with both Haqqani and Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin operatives.

The combined security force searched for the facilitator at a compound in the district. They secured and cleared multiple buildings in the area before conducting interviews with the residents. During the search numerous individuals were assessed to have ties to Haqqani activity in the area, and were detained for further questioning.

There were no shots fired and no civilians harmed during the operation.

Several insurgents were detained by Afghan and coalition forces at a bazaar in Khogyani district, Nangarhar province, yesterday.

A group of insurgents attacked the combined forces at the Wazir Bazaar with small arms fire before escaping into a tree line nearby. The combined force returned fire suppressing the insurgents and injuring two in the process. More than 10 suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning. The detainees are in the custody of Afghan Border Police.
