KABUL, Afghanistan (May 14, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained several insurgents and discovered 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of opium during a counter narcotics operation in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province yesterday.
The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.

A combined Afghan and coalition force dismounted patrol discovered four weapons caches in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, today.
The first cache consisted of one rocket-propelled grenade round, two AK-47s, two AK-47 magazines, one ICOM radio and one 30 mm round. The second cache contained two AK-47s, 50 AK-47 rounds, seven AK-47 magazines, one grenade, three chest rigs, one C-7 magazine, 30 5.56 mm rounds and 840 PKM machine gun rounds. The third consisted of 10 grenades and 2300 PKM rounds, and the fourth, one RPG tail, 984 feet (300 meters) of detonation cord, one shotgun with three rounds, 70 AK-47 rounds and a jug of opium tar.
All weapons have been or will be destroyed by security forces.
Afghan and coalition forces discovered 102 bags, totalling one ton (907 kgs) of dry opium during a counter narcotics operation in Chahar Burjak district, Nimroz province yesterday.
The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.
In Qalat district, Zabul province, Afghan and coalition forces killed two insurgents during a security operation, yesterday.
The combined force conducted the security operation to prevent a Taliban indirect-fire weapons team from carrying out an attack in the district. The two insurgents were observed preparing a weapons system for firing, and were kept under surveillance. With assistance from a coalition aircraft, the combined force was able to interdict the insurgents.
There were no civilians harmed during the operation.
