KABUL, Afghanistan (April 25, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader and killed two Haqqani insurgents during a security operation in Nadir Shah Kot district, Khost province, yesterday.

The leader coordinated attacks and was responsible for supplying insurgents with ammunition, small arms and rockets.

Multiple intelligence sources and tips from citizens led the security force to a compound in the district to search for the leader. The force isolated the compound and while attempting to clear the area they were engaged by two armed insurgents. The force responded to the insurgent attack, resulting in two insurgents killed.

The force continued their search without further incident. After interviewing residents, the force identified and detained the Haqqani leader. The women and children were protected throughout the search.

North

An Afghan and coalition force detained numerous suspected insurgents while searching for a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin leader during a security operation in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The leader is the chief logistics officer for operations and the chief political officer in Baghlan. He leads a group of 25 fighters.

Based on numerous intelligence sources, the security force targeted two compounds where suspected insurgent activity occurs in search of the leader. The force secured and cleared multiple buildings, while ensuring the safety of the women and children. During both searches, the force conducted interviews with residents. After completing both searches, the force detained numerous suspected insurgents. During the search the force discovered multiple AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun, a pistol, a chest rack and multiple magazines.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition force in Zharay district, Kandahar province was engaged by multiple insurgents during a patrol yesterday. As a result of the operation, the combined force detained numerous persons of interest, as well as finding 6,500 pounds (2,948 kilograms) of marijuana.

A coalition unit operating in Marjeh district, Helmand province yesterday discovered weapons and currency during a patrol. The find included 600 7.62 mm rounds, three loaded AK-47 magazines, an AK-47 rifle, a directional fragmentation charge, an ammunition can, a pair of binoculars, a mortar sight and 50,000 Pakistani rupees (500 U.S. dollars). The weapons were safely destroyed on site.

In Panjwai’I district, Kandahar province, yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces found 30 bags, consisting of 1,540 pounds (699 kilograms) of homemade explosives along with several red TNT blocks. The explosives will be destroyed by security forces.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, yesterday. The leader plans and participates in homemade bomb and ambush attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district.

The security force targeted a compound in the district based on multiple reports of insurgent activity in the area. The force isolated the compound and called all occupants to exit the buildings. After ensuring the safety of the women and children, the force commenced their search. Residents were interviewed about the whereabouts of the leader and two individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency were detained for further questioning. The operation was conducted with no shots fired.

In Ghazni province, a combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban leader and several of his associates during a security operation in Ghazni district, yesterday. The leader directed supply movements and explosive-device attacks on coalition forces.

The security force targeted two compounds associated with Taliban activity to search for the leader, based on intelligence tips. While clearing the first compound, one suspected insurgent attempted to evade the force and was apprehended. After interviewing residents, the force completed the search of the compound, detaining two suspected insurgents for further questioning.

At a nearby location, the force secured and cleared a second compound. After calling for all occupants to exit peacefully, the force discovered a small weapons cache hidden in one of the buildings. Multiple explosive-device materials, AK-47 rifles, a shotgun, grenades, chest racks and a mortar base plate were discovered and destroyed. Completing their search, the force identified and detained the leader along with several other suspected insurgents. There were no shots fired during either search.

A combined Afghan and coalition force in Khost province detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation in Nadar Shah Kot district, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for providing safe havens for Haqqani leaders in the district.

Intelligence tips led the security force to search a compound in the district where suspected insurgent activity occurs. The force secured and cleared the area before

interviewing local residents about the whereabouts of the facilitator. Based on the interviews, two individuals with suspected ties to Haqqani insurgency were detained for further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader and several of his associates during a security operation in Sherzad district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The leader was a suicide-vest facilitator, who planned and conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

The security force targeted the leader’s suspected compound based on numerous intelligence reports of Taliban activity in the area. The force isolated and secured the area before commencing their search. After calling for all occupants to exit the buildings, the force continued their search and questioned residents. The leader and several suspected insurgents were indentified and detained as a result of the interviews. There were no shots fired during the operation.

West

In Badghis province, a combined Afghan and coalition forces detained one suspected insurgent during a clearing operation in Murghab district, yesterday. The operation was to disrupt an insurgent safe haven in the district.

The district was targeted for clearing after multiple reports of insurgent activity in the area. During the operation the force secured and cleared several locations, while ensuring the safety of the women and children. The force concluded their search by detaining one individual with suspect ties to Taliban insurgency for further questioning. Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed during the operation
