KABUL, Afghanistan (April 24, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban leader and several of his associates during a security operation in Kunduz district, Kunduz province, yesterday.
The leader provided weapons and security for insurgents in Kunduz and was responsible for attacks on multiple targets, including election sites in September.
Based on intelligence reports, the combined force targeted a compound in the district where suspected insurgent activity occurs. The force commenced their search by isolating the compound and calling for all occupants to exit the buildings. All individuals complied, allowing them to secure the safety of the women and children.
While searching the area, the force discovered blasting caps, which are used for homemade bombs, on two of the individuals. The force also found multiple AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade with components, chest racks and multiple loaded magazines.
The targeted leader was identified, along with several additional individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency, and was detained for further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition force capture a Taliban financier and numerous suspected insurgents during a security operation in Daman district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The financier was responsible for transporting weapons and homemade bomb materials, as well as funding Taliban cells.
Intelligence tips led the combined force to search the financier’s suspected compound in the district. The forces isolated and secured a series of buildings. After calling all residents out of the buildings, the force conducted interviews and continued their search. While searching, they discovered an AK-47 assault rifle and several pistols. The financier was identified and detained as a result of the interviews from residents. Several of his associates were also detained for further questioning. Throughout the search the force ensured the safety of the civilians.
A coalition force operating in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province discovered a roadside bomb and observed several insurgents emplacing more explosive devices in a compound. After several hour of observation, the compound was destroyed with high-explosive rounds and an airstrike.

In Logar province, an Afghan and coalition force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in Charkh district, Logar province, yesterday. The facilitator assists with the coordination, execution and training of attack techniques targeting Afghan and coalition forces.
Multiple intelligence leads and tips from citizens led the security force to target a compound associated with the facilitator. The force secured and cleared the area and ensured the safety of the women and children before conducting interviews. As a result of the interviews, several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency were detained for further questioning. There were no shots fired during the operation.
ISAF today confirmed the capture of a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, April 19. The facilitator operated in Wardak province.
