KABUL, Afghanistan (April 23, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces killed several insurgents and secured a number of weapons during an operation in Shahid-E Hasas district, Uruzgan province, yesterday.
The target of the operation was a compound associated with insurgents operating in the area. Several insurgents were killed when they engaged the patrol with small arms fire, heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. Several suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.
Security forces recovered one AK-47 rifle with ammunition, nine grenades and an improvised explosive device. The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

Afghan and coalition forces detained numerous suspected insurgents during an operation in Kunduz district, Kunduz province this morning.
Among those detained was one man suspected of leading a cell of 20 Taliban fighters and facilitating the shipment of IEDs throughout Kunduz. Another detainee is suspected of providing and building IEDs for local Taliban groups. The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
South
An Afghan and coalition forces patrol discovered a weapons cache in Marjeh district, Helmand province, today, consisting of six rocket-propelled grenade rounds, one 15 mm shell casing, 700 PKM rounds, five 82 mm mortar charges, two radios, one electrical outlet tester and two machine gun barrel changing handles.
In Kandahar district, Kandahar province, Afghan and coalition forces discovered two poppy fields. The first field was 100 m x 100 m. The second, 200 m x 200 m. Afghan forces plowed both fields and burned the plants.
In Knash Rod district, Nimroz province, yesterday, coalition forces found 3,274 pounds (1,485 kilograms) of opium gum and 272 pounds (124 kgs) of heroin. The drugs were destroyed by security forces.

A coalition forces patrol discovered a weapons cache in Sayyid Karam district, Paktiya province, today, consisting of 1500-2000 PKM rounds, one machine gun, three RPG fuses, one mortar fuse, one rifle and various articles of tactical clothing. The weapons and clothing have been destroyed by security forces.
