KABUL, Afghanistan (April 22, 2011) – An International Security Assistance Force airstrike killed a Taliban leader in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province, Saturday.

The target, Said Hassan, was a Taliban leader, homemade bomb expert and facilitator who also directed attacks against Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces in the Nawah-ye Barakzai area of Helmand.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed in the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition force vehicle interdiction operation secured a large quantity of narcotics in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The operation secured approximately 4,190 pounds (1,900 kilograms) of opium gum, 264 pounds (120 kgs) of heroin and 12 bags of differing weights of fresh opium. The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.

Also in Kandahar, a combined Afghan and coalition force vehicle interdiction operation secured a large amount of chemicals used to manufacture explosive devices in Maiwand district, yesterday. The operation secured 23,150 pounds (10,500 kgs) of soda lime, 7,715 pounds (3,500 kgs) of acid, 660 pounds (300 kgs) of charcoal, 660 pounds (300 kgs) of ammonium chloride and 770 pounds (350 kgs) of ammonium nitrate. The materials were safely destroyed on site.

In Chakhansur district, Nimroz province, today, an ISAF patrol discovered 4,180 pounds (1,896 kgs) of opium gum, 264 pounds (121 kgs) of herion and 12 bags of fresh opium.

In Zharey district, Kandahar province, today, Afghan and coalition forces found 1,500 pounds (680 kgs) of hash.

All drugs have been destroyed by security forces.
