KABUL, Afghanistan (April 2, 2011) – International Security Assistance Forces killed numerous insurgents in eastern Afghanistan, today.
In Kunar province, during separate clearing operations, two ISAF air weapons teams supporting ground forces observed numerous armed insurgents in Marawarah district. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons teams engaged the enemy positions killing numerous insurgents and forcing the others to flee.

In Helmand province, an Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrol killed two insurgents and detained several others while targeting a senior Taliban leader in Musa Qualah district, yesterday.
The targeted insurgent is known to be a senior Taliban commander in northern Helmand province where he facilitates the distribution of explosives and large quantities of ammunitions to subordinate leaders. He is also responsible for planning, coordinating and carrying out small-arms and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF.
During the detention operation, one insurgent was killed when he raised an AK-47 towards the combined forces and attempted to engage them. Another insurgent was killed when he tried to throw a grenade at the combined forces. The combined forces also detained several suspected insurgents that were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
An ISAF air weapons team supporting ground forces observed two armed insurgents in Marjah district, Helmand province, today. After establishing positive identification, the air weapons team engaged killing the insurgents.
In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol was engaged with small-arms fire by several insurgents in Nahr-e Saraj district, today. After gaining positive identification of the firing direction, coalition forces returned small-arms and mortar fire killing one insurgent and forcing the others to flee.
An Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrol discovered a large weapons cache in Zharay district, Kandahar province. The cache consisted of one AK-47, 1000 7.62 mm rounds, 18 82 mm mortar rounds, four grenades, three rocket-propelled grenade rounds, one RPG launcher, six RPG boosters, one 60 mm mortar round and six chest racks.

In Nangarhar province, a combined patrol while conducting a clearing operation of Sawatyan Village confiscated a large narcotics cache in Sherazad district. The cache consisted of 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms) of marijuana.
In Paktika, Parwan and Ghazni provinces, during separate clearing operations, ISAF patrols found several large weapons and IED-making components caches in Orgun, Parwarn and Deh Yak districts, today. The caches consisted of 11 AK-47s, 150 7.62 mm rounds, two chest racks, one 60 mm mortar round, six 82 mm mortar rounds, one 105 mm artillery shell, one 155 mm artillery shell, 13 grenades, 12 anti-personnel mines, two RPG rounds, two pressure plates, one bag of ball bearings, several IED-making electrical components, detonation cord, dynamite and homemade explosives.
The drugs, weapons and IED-making components from all the caches were confiscated and have been or will be destroyed.
