KABUL, Afghanistan (March 23, 2011) – Numerous insurgents were killed by International Security Assistance Forces during a clearing operation in southern Afghanistan, today.
In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol spotted insurgents setting up a rocket and mortar position in a known firing location in Reg-e Khan Neshin district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with artillery fire killing numerous insurgents.

In Helmand province, during separate clearing operations, coalition forces were engaged by insurgents in Sangin and Nahr-e Saraj districts, today. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces returned fire killing two insurgents.
Also in Sangin district, Helmand province, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents with small-arms fire. The combined forces returned fire and called for air support. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team fired killing several insurgents.
In the same province, an air weapons team supporting ground forces observed one insurgent sniper in Nahr-e Saraj district. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the sniper position killing the insurgent.
An ISAF patrol spotted armed insurgents in Reg-e Khan Neshin district, Helmand province. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with small-arms and artillery fire killing several insurgents and forcing the others to flee.
In Helmand and Kandahar provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered several weapons and improvised explosive device-making components caches in Marjah, Zharay and Arghandab districts. The caches consisted of four AK-47s, 150 7.62 mm rounds, five full AK-47 magazines, four 82 mm mortar rounds, six recoilless rifle rounds, one 155 mm artillery shell, 10 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, eight hand-grenades, two anti-personnel mines, one IED and several pressure plates.
All weapons and explosives have been or will be destroyed.
