KABUL, Afghanistan (March 21, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces seized a large narcotics cache during a clearing operation in Khash Rod district, Nimroz province, yesterday.
Combined forces conducted a clearing operation to disrupt insurgent narcotics facilitation routes within the province. During the operation, the combined force searched two suspected vehicles containing 2,800 pounds (1,270 kilograms) of opium.

In Helmand province, an Afghan National Security Force and ISAF patrol conducted a detention operation of a Taliban leader and improvised explosive device facilitator. During the detention operation the combined patrol was engaged by insurgents in Nad’Ali district yesterday. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position, killing one insurgent.
In the same province, coalition forces of an observation post spotted insurgents emplacing an IED in Kajaki district. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position killing several insurgents and forcing the others to flee.
In Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces, combined Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrols discovered several weapons caches in Zharay and Shahid-e districts. The caches consisted of one gun, 11 122 mm artillery shells, two 107 mm mortar rounds, 19 fuses, two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, three chest racks, several IED-making components and chemicals.
All weapons, chemicals and drugs have been or will be destroyed.
