KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 18) – Afghan and International Security Assistance Forces killed more than 35 suspected insurgents and detained a Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin leader, Haqqani Network leaders and more than 10 suspected insurgents in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile in eastern Afghanistan, an insurgent used a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device to take the lives of eight civilians while wounding as many as 40 more in Khost district, Khost province today. The attack occurred at an Afghan National Police checkpoint in Khost City.

South

The International Security Assistance Force confirmed today that Sangari, an insurgent leader, was killed in an airstrike Feb. 7, in Narh-e Saraj district, Helmand province. The target of the strike, Sangari, was an insurgent leader who directed improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan security forces and ISAF.

During a vehicle interdiction mission in Helmand province yesterday, a joint security force stopped two vehicles, seizing 4,075 pounds (1850 kilograms) of opium gum, 110 pounds (50 kg) of morphine, three AK-47s with 270 rounds and three chest rigs.


East

A coalition outpost in Bar Kunar district, Kunar province received small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from several insurgents today. After gaining positive identification of the insurgent position, forces returned fire, killing several insurgents and wounding several more.

An Afghan citizen in Kahmard district, Bamyan province turned in a weapons cache to a combat outpost in the district. The cache included 27 82 mm projectiles, 22 75 mm projectiles and one 85 mm rocket.

The weapons and drugs have been or will be destroyed.
